The interview process

As described by a Monzo engineering manager in 2025.1

  1. Application

Your CV plus written answers about building customer-focused apps, technical challenges and why Monzo.

  2. Initial call1 hour

A video call with an engineer in the same role. Be ready to talk in depth about recent projects, customer-facing apps, working across teams and influencing stakeholders.

  3. Take-home or pairing

    You choose.

    • Take-home (4 hours). Improve an existing iOS or Android project: bugs, code quality, missing features and design inconsistencies. Followed by a 45-minute review call. "Stick to the timebox."
    • Pair coding (1 hour). Small tasks in a sample project, in your own IDE. It's about communication and collaboration, not speed.
  4. Behavioural1 hour

Two engineers or managers ask four questions on communication, learning, teamwork and delivery.

  5. Mobile system design1 hour

With two mobile engineers, at least one on your platform, using Excalidraw. Design how a feature would be built, focusing on data flow and abstractions rather than code.

What Monzo looks for

  • Problem-solving over experience. Monzo says it hires for problem-solving ability, and avoids brainteasers and knowledge quizzes.
  • Platform mastery. Confident, idiomatic work on iOS or Android.
  • Reasoned trade-offs. Explaining why, especially in the take-home and design rounds.
  • Collaboration. Communicating clearly while you pair, and working across teams.1

Questions to expect

Based on the topics Monzo says each stage covers.

Initial call

Talk me through a recent feature you built end to end. What would you change?

Tell me about a time you influenced a product or design decision.

Mobile system design

Design the screen that shows a customer's recent card transactions, including when they're offline.

How would you add real-time updates to that screen without draining the battery?

Behavioural

Tell me about a project that didn't go to plan. What did you learn?

How to prepare

  1. Respect the timebox. Monzo would rather see reasoned trade-offs than a weekend of polishing.
  2. Narrate while pairing. They're assessing how you work with someone, not how fast you type.
  3. Get familiar with Excalidraw. Sketch data flows and abstractions for features you know well.
  4. Prepare four behavioural stories. Communication, learning, teamwork and delivery.1

Quick answers

How long is the Monzo mobile take-home?

Four hours, with a flexible deadline, followed by a 45-minute review call. You can choose a 1-hour pairing session instead.

Does Monzo ask brainteasers in mobile interviews?

No. Monzo avoids brainteasers and knowledge quizzes and focuses on practical mobile work.

What tool is used for mobile system design?

Excalidraw, a virtual whiteboard, with two mobile engineers.1
