The interview process
As Monzo's recruiting team describes it.1
- Application
Make your CV show the products you've worked on and the impact you had, with numbers.
- Recruiter call30 min
A recruiter talks through your experience and why you're interested, and gives you context on Monzo.
- Product chat45 min
Someone from the product team asks you to talk through a recent project. They're checking that you can confidently discuss the impact of your work.
- Product loop3 interviews
Three interviews, on one day or spread over several.
- Project walkthrough. Present the most impactful product you've worked on, in about 20 minutes. Show the data, the experiments you ran and how you built the business case.
- Case study. An interactive problem-solving exercise testing product sense and execution. Monzo wants a clear, structured approach, for you to discuss who you'd work with, and to work with the interviewers rather than present at them.
- Leadership. Behavioural questions on how you collaborate with engineering, design, research and data.
- Decision and offer
Your recruiter calls with the outcome. If more than one squad wants you, hiring managers may pitch their teams to you.
What Monzo looks for
- Growth and experimentation. A track record with A/B tests, funnel analysis and data-driven segmentation.
- End-to-end ownership. Taking a product from early planning through to putting it in customers' hands.
- An analytical mindset. Finding trends in large, messy datasets.
- Comfort with ambiguity. Testing scrappily and learning as you go.
- Collaboration. Being "hard on problems, not people", and valuing different perspectives in the team.
There's no single PM profile: Monzo hires from large consumer tech companies, big incumbent banks and small start-ups.1
Questions to expect
Based on what Monzo says each stage tests.
Recruiter call and product chat
Tell me about a recent product you worked on. What was the impact, and how did you measure it?
Why Monzo, and why this team?
Project walkthrough
Walk us through the most impactful product you've built. What did the data show, which experiments did you run, and what was the business case?
Case study
About half of Monzo's active customers use it as their main bank. How would you grow that share?
Monzo now has a banking licence in Ireland. What would you change about the product for a new market, and how would you test it?
Leadership
Tell me about a time you disagreed with an engineer or designer. How did you resolve it?
Tell me about a decision you made before you had all the data. What happened when you learned more?
How to prepare
- Pick your strongest product story and put numbers on it. You'll use it in the product chat and again in the 20-minute walkthrough.
- Show the experiments. Bring the A/B tests, funnels and segments behind your decisions, not just the outcome.
- Structure the case out loud. State your approach, say who you'd bring in, and check in with the interviewers as you go.
- Prepare two or three leadership stories. Disagreement, ambiguity and working across engineering, design, research and data.
- Know the business. 15.2 million customers, £1.7bn revenue, the Irish launch, paid plans and business banking.2
Worth mentioning in the interview
- The Irish launch with its own banking licence, and how product decisions change for a new market.
- Over 1.6 million customers on paid subscription plans, and what that says about what customers value.
- The acquisition of Habito and the move into home buying.2
- A new CEO from Google, and what that could mean for how product works at Monzo.4
