About Monzo

Monzo is a UK digital bank. In the year to March 2026 it grew to 15.2 million customers and 10.4 million monthly active users, with revenue up 39% to £1.7bn and adjusted profit before tax up 20% to £172.6m. About half of its active customers use Monzo as their main bank.2, 3

The interview process

For data scientists, data analysts, analytics engineers and machine learning scientists, as Monzo's data recruiting team describes it.1

  1. Recruiter call30 min

A chat with the recruiter who'll be your main contact for the whole process.

  2. Initial call

Behavioural questions, maybe some light technical ones, and a deep dive into a past project. Expect to explain what excites you about data and the impact of your work.

  3. Take-home task

A role-specific exercise with no time limit and no textbook questions, usually delivered as a short slide deck. The brief is deliberately open, to see the decisions you make.

  4. Final interviews

    Two parts.

    • Case studies. Real or realistic Monzo business problems, with context documents and time to prepare. Discussion-based, not live coding.
    • Collaboration. Meeting cross-functional partners such as product managers and engineers, with situational questions about your achievements and challenges.
  5. Decision≤ 1 week

All interviewers meet to discuss your strengths and development areas, and a Hiring Mentor reviews the whole interview packet for fairness.

What Monzo looks for

  • Impact. Data work that changed a decision or a product.
  • Collaboration. Working well in cross-functional squads.
  • How you think. The way you approach a problem and explain your reasoning matters as much as the answer.1

Questions to expect

Based on what Monzo says each stage tests.

Initial call

Tell me about a data project you're proud of. What changed because of it?

What excites you about working in data at a bank?

Case study

Some new customers stop using their Monzo card in their first month. How would you find out why?

How would you measure whether a new savings feature is working?

Collaboration

Tell me about a time you changed a product manager's mind with data.

How to prepare

  1. Make your decisions visible in the take-home. The brief is open on purpose, so say what you assumed and why.
  2. Tell a story with your slides. Lead with the answer and what the business should do.
  3. Think aloud on business problems. The final case studies are a discussion, not a coding test.
  4. Know the business. 15.2 million customers, 10.4 million monthly active users and £1.7bn revenue.2
