About Autotrader

Autotrader Group plc describes itself as "the UK's largest automotive marketplace and leading digital platform for the automotive industry". It has been listed on the London Stock Exchange since March 2015 and is a member of the FTSE 100 Index.1

In the year ended 31 March 2026, Group revenue was £624.3m and Group operating profit was £392.7m, both up 4%. The Autotrader segment had revenue of £585.3m and an operating profit margin of 70%. It averaged 13,942 retailer forecourts, and says car buyers spent 11x more time on Autotrader than on its nearest competitor.1

Its headquarters is No.3 Circle Square in Manchester, and the careers site describes a hybrid model with a minimum of 3 days a week in the office.2 The culture page counts "1,239 Autotrader people living our values everyday in 2026".3 Chris Kelly is Chief Technology Officer and Nathan Coe is Chief Executive Officer.4

The interview process

As Autotrader's careers blog post "Our engineer assessment experience", by Tech Resource Partner Claire Isherwood and published on 4 July 2025, describes it. The post covers Professional, Senior, Principal and Technical Lead developer roles.5

  1. Application

The How we hire page says "Complete your application form in your own time and make sure it's tailored to the role you're applying for."6 One Manchester listing, for Senior Software Engineer, Backend, asks you to describe what you would bring to the role and to give an example of displaying one of Autotrader's values in personal or work life. That listing uses these two written answers as selection criteria to decide whether to progress your application.7

  2. Initial screening

The post describes the process as running "From our initial screening to the assessment day".5

  3. Assessment day

The post sets out what happens on the day, and the afternoon depends on the role you apply for.5

    • Pair programming. The first exercise. In Autotrader's words, "you'll work on a coding problem, alongside one of our developers, whilst another developer observes".5
    • Feedback session. Afterwards, "we'll sit down for a brief feedback session" on your strengths and areas for development, given regardless of outcome. The post says: "Not everyone progresses past this stage".5
    • Lunch. If you continue, "you will have an hour to reset before the afternoon".5
    • Technical questions (Professional and Senior Developer roles). The afternoon includes "a set of technical questions that focus on core software engineering principles, such as clean code, testing, and system design". "This stage also gives you the opportunity to whiteboard your responses".5
    • Whiteboarding task (Principal and Technical Lead roles). "For our Principal and Technical lead roles we have a whiteboarding task" in which you "break down complex problems, make architectural decisions, reason about trade-offs", with components "like databases, APIs, caching, and load balancing".5
    • Values interview. You "discuss your motivations for applying for the role". Autotrader says "We have designed 6 questions" to help you share times from past experience that align with its values.5
    • Office tour. The day also includes a tour of the office, "Since you'll be spending three days a week there".5
  4. Final interviewUsually remote

If you are successful after the assessment day, "you'll be notified within a week" and "invited to a final interview with a member of our leadership team". This is often the Chief Technology Officer. "This session is usually remote", and it focuses on culture and motivation.5

  5. Decision

After the final interview, "we'll let you know whether we'll be making an offer". The post adds: "Either way, you'll receive detailed feedback."5

Autotrader's How we hire page covers hiring in general, not one role. It lists four stages: Application, First stage, Second stage and Final stage, and says "you'll receive an assessment guide before each stage".6

The same page offers reasonable adjustments at multiple stages, such as "giving extra time for practical tests" and "printing interview questions, or sharing questions in advance". "You do not need a formal diagnosis to request support." Autotrader is a Disability Confident Leader, and applicants under the scheme who meet the essential criteria are progressed to the next stage, though "When we receive a high volume of applications, it may not always be feasible to progress every eligible candidate."6

The Manchester Senior Software Engineer, Backend listing says visa sponsorship is offered only for Principal Engineer and Technical Lead roles.7

What Autotrader looks for

In the pair programming, Autotrader says it is "evaluating your problem-solving skills, and how you collaborate with others". It adds: "We're interested in how you approach the problem, your thought process."5

The values interview draws on past experience that aligns with Autotrader's values.5 The culture page sets out six of them.3

  • Community. "We connect and understand each other, respect our differences and focus on finding common ground".3
  • Curious. "We look up, listen, think beyond the obvious and find the Autotrader way".3
  • Determined. "We get stuck in and have the conviction to make big things happen".3
  • Decisive. "We crack on, trusting our instincts, data and experience" and "We sometimes disagree, but we always commit and deliver together".3
  • Adaptable. "We act for the long term, accept uncertainty and challenge everything".3
  • Humble. "We share in our failures as well as our successes" and "We earn our place and take nothing for granted".3

Questions to expect

Based on what Autotrader says each stage tests. These are our practice questions, not ones Autotrader has published.

Pair programming

Before you write any code, how would you split this problem into smaller pieces?

Your pair suggests a different approach from yours. How do you decide which one to follow?

You are stuck on an edge case. What do you say to your pair, and what do you try next?

Technical questions (Professional and Senior)

What does clean code mean to you, and when have you accepted less of it to ship sooner?

How do you decide what belongs in a unit test and what needs an integration test?

Sketch a service that lets buyers search for cars by make, price and distance.

Whiteboarding task (Principal and Technical Lead)

Design the system that serves vehicle listings to buyers at peak traffic. Where do the databases and APIs sit?

Where would you add caching, and how would you stop buyers seeing a car that has already sold?

How would you spread load across instances, and what trade-offs does your choice bring?

Values interview

What made you apply for this role at Autotrader?

Tell me about a time you disagreed with a decision but still committed to it.

Tell me about a failure you shared openly with your team.

Tell me about a time you challenged an established way of working.

Final interview

What motivates you day to day as an engineer?

What kind of team culture brings out your best work?

How to prepare

  1. Read the assessment guide. Autotrader says you'll receive one before each stage, so use it to plan your preparation.6
  2. Rehearse pairing, not just solving. Work through a coding problem with a friend and narrate your reasoning, because the exercise looks at your thought process and how you collaborate.5
  3. Prepare for your level's afternoon. For Professional and Senior Developer roles, revise clean code, testing and system design. For Principal and Technical Lead roles, practise whiteboarding with databases, APIs, caching and load balancing, and say your trade-offs aloud.5
  4. Match a story to each value. The values interview has 6 questions about past experience that aligns with Autotrader's values.5 Prepare one example each for Community, Curious, Determined, Decisive, Adaptable and Humble.3
  5. Write your application answers yourself. The Manchester Senior Software Engineer, Backend listing says AI-generated answers are discouraged and that irrelevant or incomplete answers will lead to rejection.7 The How we hire page also offers guidance on using AI when applying.6
  6. Use the feedback session. You get feedback on strengths and areas for development after the pair programming, whatever the outcome.5 Listen for anything you can apply in the afternoon.
  7. Ask about adjustments. Autotrader offers reasonable adjustments at multiple stages, and you do not need a formal diagnosis to request support.6
  8. Know the numbers. £624.3m Group revenue, 13,942 average retailer forecourts and average revenue per retailer of £2,995 in the year ended 31 March 2026.1

Worth mentioning in the interview

  • CEO Nathan Coe said "AI will significantly enhance our ability" to benefit car buyers and retailers, citing retailer products "such as Co-Driver and Buying Signals" and improved search for car buyers "both on our marketplace and within ChatGPT".1
  • Revenue growth was 3% in the second half and lower in the fourth quarter, reflecting more difficult trading conditions and retailer feedback on the Deal Builder roll-out, which Autotrader later recommenced. By year end, more than three times as many customers were on Deal Builder as a year earlier.1
  • Autotrader moved to a new head office in Manchester in January 2026.1
  • For financial year 2027, Autotrader expects Group operating profit of £395m to £415m.1
  • Niki Kilby became Chief GTM Officer and Jessica Hall became Chief Growth Officer in September 2026.4
