About Amazon

Amazon's net sales grew 12% to $716.9bn in 2025, and its cloud business, AWS, grew 20% to $128.7bn.4 Everyone it hires is assessed against its 16 Leadership Principles, from Customer Obsession to Success and Scale Bring Broad Responsibility.2, 3

The interview process

As Amazon's own PM-T prep page describes it.1

  1. Application

Show impact with metrics, and use the job description's language naturally.3

  2. Technical phone screen60 min

With a senior leader. Half the time is behavioural questions on the Leadership Principles, half is on the technical product life cycle.

  3. Writing assessment

Sent after a successful phone screen, and due two days before your interview loop.

  4. Interview loop5 × 55 min

Five interviews with members of Amazon's technical product management community, covering technical and non-technical skills. Your loop may include a Bar Raiser: "an objective interviewer from outside the hiring team" who protects Amazon's hiring bar.1, 3

  5. Outcome≤ 5 business days

You'll hear back within five business days of your loop.

What Amazon looks for

  • Product management. Writing requirements, building marketing plans, segmenting customers, building business models and analysing success metrics.
  • Technical depth. A strong understanding of the technology behind the products you manage.
  • Stakeholder management. Working across teams to get things built.1
  • The Leadership Principles. Especially Customer Obsession, Ownership, Dive Deep, Have Backbone; Disagree and Commit, and Deliver Results.2

Questions to expect

Based on Amazon's Leadership Principles and what the PM-T loop tests.

Phone screen and loop: Leadership Principles

Tell me about a time you started from a customer problem and worked backwards to a product decision.

Tell me about a time your metrics and your customer feedback disagreed. What did you do?

Tell me about a time you disagreed with a senior stakeholder, then committed to their decision.

Product and technical

Walk me through a technical trade-off you made with engineers. How did it change the product?

How would you decide what success looks like for a new feature, and what would you measure?

How to prepare

  1. Build a story bank. Two stories for each Leadership Principle, told with the STAR method and real numbers.1, 3
  2. Say "I", not "we". Make your own contribution clear, and aim for two to three minutes an answer.
  3. Get your writing sharp. The writing assessment comes before the loop, so rehearse clear, structured product documents now.1
  4. Refresh the technical side. Be ready to explain architecture choices and trade-offs in the products you've managed.
  5. Say it out loud. Amazon's own advice is to rehearse your answers aloud for clarity.
