Starling Bank customer service interview guide
How Starling hires Customer Service Team Members in Cardiff and Southampton: an application review, a talent call, then a video interview with a role play.
About Starling Bank
For the year to 31 March 2026, Starling reported profit before tax of £217.1 million (FY25: £223.4 million), its fifth consecutive year of profitability. Group revenue was £887.4 million (FY25: £940.0 million). Group platform accounts rose to 6.2 million and customer deposits to £12.7 billion.1
Raman Bhatia is Group Chief Executive Officer. The results release says Starling has 12 offices around the world, including Southampton, Cardiff, Manchester and Fleet.1 Its careers page lists UK locations in London, Manchester, Southampton, Cardiff and Dublin, plus Engine by Starling locations in New York, Dubai, Sydney and Toronto.2
Starling's Annual Report 2026 page says it is "Leading the neobanks in service and ranking #6 across all industries", citing the Institute of Customer Service Top 10 from Jan 2026, and says it is a Which? Recommended Provider for the seventh year in a row.3
The interview process
Starling's listing for its Cardiff and Southampton Customer Service Team Member role, published on 6 October 2026, describes these steps. It covers that one vacancy, so another listing may describe a different process.4
- Application review
The listing says: "Once we have reviewed your application we will be in touch to let you know if we are progressing your application further or not."4
- Talent acquisition callCall
If your application progresses, Starling invites you to book a call with someone from its talent acquisition team.4
- Final stage video interviewVideo
After the call, "if the role seems like the right fit", you are invited to a final stage video interview with a Team Leader from the Customer Services team. The listing says the Team Leader will be able to give you more insight into the role and life at Starling, and will talk to you about your experience and love of customer service.4
- What it contains. In the listing's words: "The interview will be made up of Q&A questions, role play activity and a written communication exercise."4
- Training and start
The listing says: "We will have start dates monthly from November - March." Training is in the office: 6 weeks for Evenings (weeks 1 and 2 full time, 9:00 - 17:30 Monday - Friday) and 5 weeks, 9:00 - 17:30 Monday - Friday, for Days and Overnight.4
The same listing offers three shift options, Evenings (25 or 30 hours a week), Days (37.5 hours a week) and Overnight (37.5 hours a week), in a hybrid workplace. It states: "The starting salary for this role is £28,000 FTE."4
A separate Starling listing, for an overnight Customer Service Team Lead in Southampton, says "We use AI tools to support various parts of our recruitment process, helping our team manage applications and assessments more efficiently", and that these tools "do not replace human judgment with all final hiring decisions being made by our team."5
What Starling looks for
The job itself involves "Providing exceptional customer service via phone, email, live chat and social media" and "Responding to customer complaints and escalating issues as necessary." The listing names "five core values – Listen, Keep It Simple, Do The Right Thing, Own It, and Aim for Greatness", which it says "are at the heart of everything we do, guiding our strategy and shaping our culture."4
- Understanding of good service. "Working in a contact centre environment is not essential - showing us you understand what great customer service looks like is."4
- Flexibility across channels. Being "comfortable talking to customers however they choose to reach out".4
- Clear communication. The listing asks for "excellent written and verbal communication skills".4
- Resilience. "Money is an emotive subject and some interactions can be difficult, you'll need to be resilient and able to help your customers when they need you the most."4
- Awareness of vulnerability. The "About you" section lists "Knowledge of vulnerabilities."4
- Comfort with change. Being "comfortable working in a fast changing environment".4
- Basic IT skills. "We will offer lots of training and guidance but Starling is a FinTech and you will need basic IT skills to navigate our laptops (MacBook) and systems."4
- Interest in Starling. "We're looking for people who are passionate about us and our product, so check out our App or read about our journey before meeting with us."4
Older posts on Starling's blog add colour, though they don't describe this listing's process. In a 2022 post on the Cardiff customer service team, Team Leader Olivia Beedell, who interviews applicants, said "We're not worried about you having perfect skills nailed down", that candidates must be "passionate about Starling and someone that's keen to learn", and "We look at the whole person." At that point the Cardiff office had hired "almost 900 people" in the two years since it opened, and she managed 15 Customer Service Team Members.6
A November 2022 post described "our 24/7 customer service team", reachable by in-app Live Chat, phone, email or social media, and quoted an agent saying "We're not timed for each interaction." It also said "All customer service agents spend their first weeks training in what we call the Academy."7
A January 2025 blog of general interview tips, not specific to this role, quotes Chief Compliance Officer Bernadette Smith saying authenticity is what Starling looks for: "Pretending that you know everything... isn't authentic."8

How to prepare
- Spend time in the app first. The listing asks you to check out Starling's App or read about its journey before meeting the team.4
- Rehearse a role play out loud. Ask a friend to play a worried or annoyed customer. Listen first, explain the next step plainly, and say when you would pass the issue on.
- Draft a few written replies. The final interview includes a written communication exercise, so practise short, clear replies to complaints and check your spelling and tone.4
- Bring stories, not just skills. Starling's 2025 tips blog describes STAR as "a four point plan to structure your answer to standard interview questions": Situation, Task, Action, Result.8 Prepare three or four examples about helping people, handling pressure and coping with change.
- Read up on vulnerable customers. The listing asks for knowledge of vulnerabilities and says some money conversations can be difficult.4 Think about the signs you might spot and how you would respond kindly.
- Tie your answers to the values. Listen, Keep It Simple, Do The Right Thing, Own It and Aim for Greatness are the five the listing names.4 Pick one example for each.
- Be honest about gaps. If you don't know something, say so and explain how you would find out. That suits the authenticity point in Starling's tips blog.8
- Check the practicalities. Know which shift you want and whether you can attend 5 or 6 weeks of office training, depending on the shift.4
Worth mentioning in the interview
- The service ranking. Starling says it leads the neobanks in service and ranks #6 across all industries in the Institute of Customer Service Top 10 from Jan 2026.3
- Engine by Starling. The FY26 results release says Engine's "revenue grew by 25% as its client base doubled", and that it signed a 10-year agreement with Tangerine, its first client in North America.1
- Ember. Starling acquired Ember, "an all-in-one accounting and tax platform", which it says has "already enhanced our SME offering."1
- Regulatory limits on growth. The same release mentions "certain regulatory restrictions that moderated our ability to grow our UK customer base."1
- Restructuring. Tech.eu reported on 3 July 2026 that Starling, which "employs more than 4,000 people", was "set to cut around 130 jobs" across its banking and technology units, and quoted it as "changing parts of our banking team structure to simplify how we operate" while "continuing to hire tech and AI engineers."9 City AM called it an "AI-powered simplification drive".10
- New Chair. Starling announced on 23 June 2026 that Colin Bell, former CEO of HSBC Bank PLC and HSBC Europe, would become Chair from 1 July 2026, subject to regulatory approval, succeeding David Sproul.11
- Recent launches. Starling's newsroom lists an agentic AI assistant for business (24 August 2026), a Student Account with an interest-free overdraft (12 August 2026), and expense cards and a team access tool for small business customers (9 July 2026).12
