About Aldi
Aldi's business model is offering "products of the highest quality at the lowest price", and it says "Our people are the heart of everything we do". It has more than 43,000 colleagues in the UK.1
As of September 2026 Aldi runs 1,092 UK stores and has a 10.6% share of the UK grocery market. In the 12 months to 31 December 2025, Aldi UK's sales rose 5% to a record £19 billion, and operating profit was £432.9 million, down from £435.5 million in 2024. The interview process
Aldi's store assistant recruitment page describes three stages.3
- Online application
Apply online or upload your CV. The form asks questions such as "What hours are you looking for?" so Aldi can see whether you're right for the opportunities it has.3
- Interview or assessmentArea Manager
This stage might include "a short video interview followed by a group or individual interview with an Area Manager". You're asked a series of questions and scenarios about the store assistant role.3
- Aldi store experienceIf invited
After a successful interview, you "might be invited to take part in the 'Aldi store experience'", where you see the different tasks the role involves.3
The job
- Hours. Store assistant contracts run from 10 to 40 hours a week, and flexible contracts average 25 hours.3
- Holiday. 28 days a year, including bank holidays.3
- Breaks. Aldi says it is "the only retailer to offer paid breaks to all colleagues".3
- Training. A structured programme of about 6 weeks, learning from experienced colleagues and through the "CheckPoints structured training programme and E-Learning Portal".3
- Pay. From 1 April 2026 store assistants earn £13.50 an hour nationally and £14.88 inside the M25, rising to £14.47 and £15.20 with length of service.4

How to prepare
- Know your hours. The application asks what hours you're looking for, so decide before you apply.3
- Have an example for each quality. Friendly, respectful, positive, reliable and customer-first: one short, real story for each.
- Practise scenarios out loud. Talk through what you'd do, step by step, with the customer at the centre.
- Be ready for video. The interview stage might open with a short video interview, so find a quiet spot and test your camera.3
- Know the basics about Aldi. Its model of high quality at the lowest price, and its plans to grow.1, 2
Worth mentioning in the interview
- In September 2026 Aldi announced a £900 million investment in 2027, including 40 new stores, as it works towards 1,500 UK stores.2
- The April 2026 pay rise covered more than 28,000 hourly-paid store colleagues and was part of a £42 million investment in colleague pay in 2026.4
