Avanti West Coast trainee train driver interview guide
How Avanti West Coast selects trainee train drivers: an online sift, OPC paper and computer tests, a competency-based interview and a Driver Manager interview.
About Avanti West Coast
Avanti West Coast's About Us page describes it as "A FirstGroup and Trenitalia company".1 For the period 31 May to 27 June 2026, the page reports that 85.4% of trains arrived within 15 minutes of schedule. It gives a Net Promoter Score of 21, cancellations of 2.37% attributed to Avanti, and 5.88% of trains cancelled from all causes.1
Its careers site, operated as First Trenitalia West Coast Rail, says its services "connect six of the largest cities in the UK": London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh. It gives them a "combined metropolitan population of over 18 million".2
FirstGroup's results for the 52 weeks to 28 March 2026, published on 18 June 2026, list WCP, "incorporating Avanti West Coast and West Coast Partnership Development", as one of its two DfT-contracted train operating companies.3 Avanti's Meet the Team page names Andy Mellors as Managing Director and Jo MacPhail as People Director. It says "Andy was appointed Managing Director in March 2023".4
The interview process
As Avanti's Train Driver Recruitment page describes it. The page was last updated on 23 January 2025.5
- Stage 1: Application form
Avanti lists this as "Stage 1 - Application Form (AWC Hosted)".5
- Stage 1.5: Online sift
Here "The Occupational Psychology Centre (OPC) will undertake a check of distance from the depot". The OPC will also "check in case individuals have previously sat the assessments and are eligible to apply".5
- Stage 2: OPC online questionnaire and assessmentsOnline
On the questionnaire, Avanti says, "OPC look at interest in the role and why individuals are looking to be a train driver".5 The online assessments are:
- Stage 3: OPC assessment centrePaper tests
Avanti names three paper tests at this stage.5
- Stage 4: OPC face-to-face assessment centreComputer tests + CBI
This stage combines computer-based tests with a Competency Based Interview (CBI).5
- Stage 5: Driver Manager interview
Avanti calls this "the final stage in the process and hosted by Avanti West Coast". It says "This is an interview with the driver management team", and "if successful at this stage individuals will enter the talent bank".5
An Avanti press release of 7 March 2025 says "All applicants that are successful at interview are added to a talent bank". There they wait for a driver training course start date at their preferred location.6 In the campaign that release covers, applications "were kept open for a week rather than the standard 24 to 48 hours". Avanti also launched "the rail industry's first ever recruitment chatbot".6
Avanti's careers site FAQ applies to all roles, not just drivers. It says "All job offers at Avanti depend on a satisfactory result to a medical test" and "You'll need to take drug and alcohol tests as part of this". Successful applicants must also undertake "a basic DBS check".7 The same FAQ says the number of interview stages "depends which job you're applying for", and that feedback cannot be given to applicants who don't make the shortlist.7
Attempts and Avanti's enhanced standard
Avanti's page says "For the trainee driver process, individuals have 2-lifetime attempts". If you fail any stage more than twice you cannot reapply, and "These lifetime attempts extend to all attempts across any train operator".5
It also says "Avanti and several other train operators use enhanced standards on assessments", while others use "national standard". If you pass to national standard "but not Avanti", you use up a lifetime attempt for Avanti, but not for operators that use national standard.5
The next two points are industry-wide, not Avanti's own process. RSSB's standard RIS-3751-TOM Issue 4, "Psychometric Assessment in Train Driver Selection", was issued on 7 December 2024. It "sets out requirements and guidance on the psychometric assessment used during the selection process for train driver candidates who will drive on the GB mainline railway".8 On 13 January 2025, RSSB said Issue 4 "increases the number of available attempts a candidate can make and clarifies the validity of these tests". RSSB gave no exact figures.9
So two sources sit side by side: RSSB's January 2025 statement on more attempts, and Avanti's page, last updated 23 January 2025, which gives 2 lifetime attempts.5, 9
Who can apply
- Age and distance. Avanti's page, last updated 23 January 2025, says "The two main requirements for the role are that applicants are 20 ½ years old at the point of applying" and that "they live within 1 hour of a depot".5
- Medical standards. The same page says applicants must meet the required medical standards.5
Industry-wide, the Train Driving Licences and Certificates Regulations 2010 now require a licence applicant to have "attained the age of 18 years", with effect from 30 June 2026.10 When the government announced the cut in minimum train driver age on 7 May 2025, Maggie Simpson OBE of the Rail Freight Group said: "Each freight and passenger operator will decide for itself whether and how to recruit younger drivers".11
What Avanti West Coast looks for
- Discipline and customer focus. Avanti says drivers need "to be disciplined, and customer focused".5
- Punctuality. It asks for "a strong commitment to providing punctual services".5
- Comfort with your own company. Avanti adds: "You should also be comfortable spending long periods of time alone".5
- Shift work. The role involves shift work, including early mornings and late nights.5
Avanti lists the qualities the Magnificent 7 Situational Judgement Test assesses as "Conscientious, Humility, Motivated, Pride, Responsible, Risk Focus, Supportive".5
Industry-wide, a Department for Transport release of 19 August 2026 says "the rail industry is looking for people from all backgrounds who can remain focused under pressure".12
Training and pay
Avanti's page says "There's a lot to learn in the first 16 weeks". That phase is classroom-based, with regular assessments, workbooks and logbooks. Practical training with instructors and mentors follows.5
The page gives no trainee salary. It says qualified drivers "could reach a salary of circa £77,000 within just a few years".5 Industry-wide, the August 2026 DfT release says "Training to become a train driver is paid with national trainee salaries ranging between £27,000 and £33,000".12
Questions to expect
Based on what Avanti West Coast says each stage tests. These are our own practice questions, not ones Avanti publishes.
OPC online questionnaire
What first made you interested in driving trains, and what have you done to learn about the job since?
Why Avanti West Coast rather than another operator?
OPC Competency Based Interview
Describe a time you spotted a risk that others had missed. What did you do about it?
Tell us about a mistake you made at work. How did you own it and put it right?
Give an example of when you kept to a rule even though nobody was checking.
Tell us about a time you supported a colleague who was struggling.
Driver Manager interview
How would you cope with long periods working alone in the cab?
How would you fit early mornings and late nights around the rest of your life?
What does a punctual service mean to a customer travelling between two cities?
Tell us about a time you put a customer's needs first under time pressure.
How to prepare
- Check the basics first. Avanti's page names living "within 1 hour of a depot" as one of the two main requirements, and the OPC checks distance from the depot at the online sift.5
- Treat every attempt as precious. Avanti's page gives 2 lifetime attempts across any train operator, and a pass at national standard but not Avanti's standard still uses one up for Avanti.5
- Know why you want the job. The Stage 2 questionnaire looks at your interest in the role and why you want to be a train driver.5 Have a clear, honest answer ready in your own words.
- Build stories around the Magnificent 7. Avanti lists Conscientious, Humility, Motivated, Pride, Responsible, Risk Focus and Supportive.5 Find one real example for each, from work, study or home, to use in the Competency Based Interview.
- Practise concentration. The Visual Search Exercise focuses on visual cues, multitasking and maintaining concentration, and the Vienna tests focus on vigilance and reaction.5 Rest well before each assessment day.
- Prepare for the checks after an offer. Avanti's careers FAQ says all job offers depend on a medical test, including drug and alcohol tests, and a basic DBS check.7
- Expect to wait after Stage 5. Successful candidates go into a talent bank until a training course start date at their preferred location.6
Worth mentioning in the interview
- Avanti's page says: "It's our goal to increase the number of female applicants for new driver roles with us to 50% by 2030".5
- Its 7 March 2025 press release says "One third of new Avanti West Coast trainee driver recruits are women". In that campaign "Over 1,000 applications were received from women", alongside "a record number of over 9,000 applications from men".6
- FirstGroup's FY 2026 results say "In February 2026, Avanti West Coast began trialling a pioneering new tool to boost train service reliability during unplanned disruption". The tool is a timetable optimisation programme adopted with the Centre for Modelling and Simulation.3
- On 28 September 2026 the Department for Transport announced that "From 7 March 2027, Avanti West Coast's services will be nationalised", with the government stepping in "at the first opportunity after the expiry of its contract".13
- The same announcement cites "a £50 million investment at Euston station over the next 3 years" and "the existing £840 million investment to improve infrastructure problems". On timetable changes focused on routes into and out of Manchester, it says "Amendments will start to come in from December 2026".13
- The government's public ownership guidance, last updated 20 September 2026, says "Great Western Railway's services will be the next to transfer on 13 December 2026", "followed by Avanti West Coast's services on 7 March 2027".14 FirstGroup's June 2026 results put the "WCP transition" to public ownership as "expected around end of FY 2027".3
